column inches?

so if an ad is 6 Col. x 12”, what is the freaking width? why cant the newspaper just tell me how wide a column is or is column a standard unit of measurement?
i've never done a newspaper ad before so i am a little confused. and feel free to laugh at my question.

they should be able to tell you the exact size in inches.

fantastic. i just wanted to make sure that column inches is not some standard unit of measurement and make a fool out of myself.
i asked for their ad specs and this is what they sent me. so i will call them.

Every newspaper column width is different. Also, make sure you know exactly what section of the newspaper the ad is appearing in as each section may have different column widths.
Many a time I've called a newspaper, got the width, set the ad, only to find out I'd been supplied the wrong size.
