I need some file management advice, because maybe I am overlooking something you experts may catch.
I am working on a pattern in illustrator that consists of alot of small parts. I placed a file in the document , and live traced it with the color 16 setting. This took a 20K file to 1.8MB.
This element has been replicated many many times to make this pattern. The file size is currently 36MB. But for some reason my system is locking up, very sluggish, and when i make edits and move parts its like a 20-30 delay before i see any action happen.
Im baffled Ive worked with 600mb files before with no issues. I am experiencing no problems with any other programs.
Im on a 2.66 Quad core Mac Pro with 3 gigs of ram. Running Illy2.
Thanks

that should read 20-30 second delay

file size is not your issue, its the complexity of paths in the traced object being repeated.
you could try making a pattern tile with your object but it'll probably still perform just as slow.
try doing the live trace with tweaked settings to reduce the number of points.

or if it doesn't need to be vectors, rasterize a tile and repeat.

he speaks truth, i wonder how many hundreds of thousands of nodes it's tracking

If you are able to make a pattern swatch out of it, you're job will be SO much easier. This capability is there specifically so you don't have to manually repeat a group over and over and over... You may have to expand or rasterize it when printing, but otherwise there are no downsides.
