i don't mind putting in the hours...the problem is when you apply it seems like submitting your resume into a black whole sometimes.

submit your book to staffing agencies or an agent. they have connections to get you in the door.

experience, and a good portfolio (of real work, not college work)

don't just submit your resume. phone them or find out the name of the creative/art director and then talk to them about showing your book. avoid your name being put into a pile that more than likely will get a cursive viewing at best.

thanks for all of your responses. what are your favorite agents to work through? aquent? any others? the other problem that i face is that my portfolio is not very diverse as I have been working as in-house designer.

F*ck up entirely, drag your heels, and blame the next man.
You should be on top of the pile in no time.

Yeah, once you get in, that's your only plan of action.
I know this is obvious, but if you know anyone in an agency, ask them what they can do for you.

Internships always help, so does talent and knowing people that work there. Sometimes an email to the right person goes a long way.

there are so many folks on NT who work at large firms.
ask them to submit your stuff.
everyone gets their job via someone they know.
or get some awards. but if you did get some awards already, you wouldnt be asking
:)

Where do you live? Try looking at Digitas/Modem Media/MBC (if you're in Philly I can see if I can help out) if you're in the areas they are.

Make sure your cover letter mentions something about your willingness to sell your soul to the devil himself. And be ready to spit out wads and wads of bull$*#@ at your interview. That should do it.
