Did anyone else see this last night?
what an awesomely entertaining and informative program!
It was well put together in the sense that it laughed along with the tourette outbursts of the teenagers (as they did themselves) but it also told you about the condition itself. Like the article says it was "funny and touching".
The journey started off with them all walking round london (when we were on the highest terror alert) and they are walking abotu shouting BOMB and TERRORIST outside parliament etc. Not funny but at the same time funny.
What i didnt know about the condition before was that it isnt just random sporadic outbursts, but instead they have a battle in their mind with themselves combatting the aspects that WE are conditioned to in these times socially.
They know at that moment they arent meant to say something ... so they just say it.
as an example the guy John Davidson was saying that he used to have an electric ring hob in his house and when it glowed red, he'd sometimes just slam his hand on it cos he knew inside he shouldnt. But said now he has gas it isnt so much of a problem as a quick 'hand in the flame' doesnt do as much damage.watch it if it's repeated!!!

I thought it was total exploitation! Poorly put together and Mr Allen was there to boost his own "coolness"
I bet the programme makers came up with the title before even thinking about making it - "Tourette De France" - great title, but sh*te television

I must admit I thought it wasn't put together very well, also. But it did give an insight into the most extreme cases of this absolutley bizarre disorder.

agreed about the insights - i think the only bit worth merit was taking them to the hopsital where it was first discovered, by Dr.....something....Tourette

I dont think it was total exploitation.
I thought it was taken on the level, it wasnt too serious a program and it definitely wasnt exploiting the funnyness of their outbursts or their condition.
Rather than thinking afterwards "haha that was funny as hell with all those outbursts" it made me think about the condition and how hard it must be to have a condition like that - especially in todays politically correct society where everyone keeps their head down and gets on with things. Essentially these people are having outbursts which are "the truth" in a way - its something we, deep down, all think in our heads subconciously whether we admit to it or not - but cos we are conditioned by a "moral" (or seemingly so) society we keep it inside.

It was done before in the late 80's by the BBC. Followed on lad with Tourette's in the Yorkshire If I remember. Back then, it wasn't recognised as a disorder.
The family ate togther with covers over their food because he spat and swore constantly.
Terrible thing, but at the time, I nearly puked from laughing.
(Especially the bit in the supermarket with the old biddies and when he called his teacher a stupid c*nt in class).
- I saw that one. pretty good program though I felt bad for the kid.zenmasterfoo

That was the infamous 'Johns not mad', and its in Scotland.
John was in it last night, as he's now a Youth Worker.

That illustrates the point i made about exploitation - it's been done before, the vast majority of people know what Tourettes is (Especially after the latest Big Brother)
There was also a programme that followed english kids on a Tourettes camp in America
Why keep doing it? Exploitation
You don't have quite as many programmes about the perils of other afflictions - it seems

exploitation is when I said I would do that art video for that guy and I couldn't sit down for a week afterwards :'(
