Looking for a nice camera to get started with. Which one would you get? A used Canon 20d or a brand new digital rebel xti? Im only going to get the body so any good lens you reccommend as well? Thanks!

i have the rebel, in retrospect, i'd rather have the 20d

20D, but there might be good deals for new 30d now as well as it's going to be replaced, possibly this spring.
Warranty on this kind of equipment is really worth having.

I have the XTi, very nicely put together piece of work

I would get the 20D...
I'm using a 17-40mm F4 L lens and its quite good, the 17-55mm IS USM seems to be a tad sharper though if you can afford it.

looking to spend close to or less than what i could get a brand new xti body only for which is $700.

they are both good options, if you can get a used 20d that is in good condition I would still get one. The build quality is much better than the xti. Magnesium vs plastic bodies. The view finder is better and the twin dials on the 20d make it much nicer to use.

20D.
I have a Rebel and its great to start, but am already looking to upgrade after one year into the DSLR experience.
If you're serious about getting into photography, you will outgrow the Rebel fairly quickly.
