isn't it basically like having a computer that you only use for internet except it has phoning capabilities.
if i didn't have a computer i would get one. couldn't justify it otherwise.

I was looking at the Treo 680 and those are 499, 299 with a 2yr agreement and 199 after a 100 maybe you'll get it maybe you won't mail in rebate.

Found it.
The iPhone: Price - $499 4GB, $599 8GB
That is a bit steep.
What are the chances this thing comes off like the RAZR? The RAZR enters the market at 400 bucks, and now can be purchased for 99 with a 2 year agreement.

one major point everyone is missing is... how does it WORK.
most of the apple haters say oh a mac is pretty but it's too expensive blah blah, and have never USED ONE, and therefore will never understand
sure, i can put tons of apps on my phone and it does all the things the iphone does and more, and it wasn't as expensive (though, almost), but one major detail here is that... it works like a steaming pile of poo. the apps crash and freeze, UI is not consistent, etc, etc.
the experience is more important than what you read in a list of specs

(Jan 17 07, 11:07)The features could be better for that price (granted, I haven't tried it yet), such as the camera.
I'm not a MAC "hater" and I HAVE used the machines before.
Price is a big deal.
I disagree about the experience being "more important" than the specs. They are both quite important.

what's the real cost of something expensive that works vs something cheap that doesn't?
i work in IT, so i am painfully aware that those dells we got for a song aren't so cheap considering it's a daily process to keep them all running. contrast that with the expensive macs we have that, aside from a software update every few weeks, require zero maintainance.
if apple can do with a phone what they've done with a desktop, i'm all for it

true, we shall see how apple fares with mobile os... i can't say that their macos is the end all be all though.
i would say linux is closer to being the most stable.
i will agree windows has its quirks.
i use both mac and pc.
i will say the trade off is this. pc's are more widely compatible and have more software available to them than a mac. (running windows on mac doesn't always work either by the way for some things)
BUT the trade off is you have to know how to configure a system, and get into the technical aspect of things.
you don't need much technical experience to run either OS...just if you don't have a lot of technical experience, a PC will most likely give you grief.
crashing on a mobile os is not a very big deal. you restart it...by switch or take the battery out. you lose no data and you're back up in a matter of seconds.
it's not like they crash ALL the time.... mine just about never crashes... when do they crash? when you install software that wasn't made for them.
there unfortunately have been a lot of different components in smartphones over the years and sadly the same program on the same os on different phones can make a big difference.
so don't put all your hopes into an os.... in actuality the processor in a smartphone also plays a role.
no one will know for sure until the iphone is out. My argument is that apple is starting on the wrong foot.
have they not learned from Sony vs. Nintendo?
sony has to raise cost of games cuz their system is way too expensive and their cost for R&D and to produce is putting them in a world of hurt. While Nintendo was smart and can offer (maybe lesser quality graphics) a more (or just as) entertaining system for a LOT less.
It's a bold move for Apple - they know they had a success with overpriced mp3 players....granted they worked. but overpriced. Now they are gonna try their hand at another piece of overpriced hardware.

yes, we shall see. and if it fails and nothing comes of it aside from getting all the other manufacturers off their collective asses to improve their UI and usability, then we all win (except apple, ha)

so...... did anyone hear the one the shuffle?
