No TV alone will be able to upsample an SD signal to 55" and look good. At that point you need a good, dedicated upconverting box which will run about $2000.

---HDTV is not 1080p, it's 720p or 1080i. It's hard to say when it will be due to bandwidth issues. The only thing supporting 1080p right now really is an HD-DVD or BluRay player. Sometimes you can get an upconvertor that will also convert signals up to 1080p.
As another note, GET AN HD ANTENNA if you have over air HD broadcasts in your area. Cable and Satellite have to compress their signals for bandwidth, so you will never see HD like you will as it is over the air.

and directv only carries certain local hd channels depending on your market.

yeah my local atlanta stations should be in HD but they re not available yet ... not where I live anyways
on average what is the number of HD stations that you guys are able to see
I can only watch about 10 HD channels

damn....thre is a bunch of shit to know, huh?...i really appreciate the input fellas.

On average 10 -20 HD channels are available via cable or satellite.
Over air, it's usually the major networks and depends on area. Up here in Canada, we get no HD signals over the air unless we pick up something from over the border. :(
Over air signals are not big up here. All cable and satellte.

i've had directv and had about 12 hd channels, including local which i needed an antenna for. i've got comcast now and i have about the same, but i do not have all the premium channels, like cinemax and tmc.

My folks just got this one:

I've seen a few reviews that give it the best pic out there. It does get a notch down because it doesn't come with a tuner or speakers, but that seems silly to me as I hope you'd have separate speakers with a high end system!
It was between the Pioneer Elite and the NEC.
Personally, I prefer the look of Plasmas to LCDs, although in a year or two I am sure the LCD (or one of the newer technologies) will surpass plasmas, but not now.
Pioneer just came out with an Elite 52" with 1080i, but it costs about $8k. I'd guess that's the best looking out there.
