Anyone know the reason or how to stop Firefox from getting up to 90%+ cpu usage for no reason?

I'm on XP btw. I have searched but haven't found any solutions. It seems to be a common problem.

Press the red and white X in the top right corner.

i've been asking that question myself. can it be that once you run an extension it remains operative?

Seriously this time; I've been programming Java for the past two years and when you do things slightly wrong in Java - whomp - the cpu grinds to a halt.
I'm told firefox uses Java.

i've never had the problem. is it always at 90% cpu usage? which version of FF are you using?

it happened to me once. i upgraded and didn't install some estensions i had before, like downloaders feeds etc. most of the extensions out there are user contributions and have a lot of bugs.

I am using 2.0 now. It happened with 1.5 too. It will be ok for so many hours and then I'll notice the whole pc getting slow and check the process and stop it because it's usually over 90%..

I'm looking through the same search now. I think it may have to do with Flash or advertising. Just closing out weather.com made it drop an average of 20%.

Yea, me too ... I hate having to close out of it - just to reopen it.
Then again ... you know I need to check the weather every ...
Why do I need this? Haha.

How many tabs do you have open?
I've had a ton of tabs open with the same issue: also have you made this change to increase the speed of firefox? Makes a big difference and might effect CPU
