the best thing to do is to just keep building sites/projects.
lots of resources available to help improve:

Try picking one thing you like about one of those sites, start with the simple things like the preloaders or the xml fed news areas. Try your best and focus on emulating or reproducing what they have done.
Once you've figured out one thing move on to the next, so on and so forth until you "get it"
Good luck!

a good book is the Flash MX/2004 training from the source by franklin/makar. It sounds old, and is, but really covers all the beginner bases and is in AS 2.0. I still flip back to it time to time when i forgot the difference between public and private classes (haha).

i prefer the macromedia tween class to the laco tween, but mainly because sometimes i work with other developers and i don't have to worry about whether or not they have that extension.

Hey Blaw,
Just getting into the MM Tween class and someones just suggested I use the Mosessupposes one instead.
What I want to do is use the Tween class to animate an object into the screen, then when thats finished animate in the next object etc over 7 objects. Any ideas/advice on the best way to do this???
Thanks!

laco tweens can do that - you can call a function at the end.

MM's Tween class has an onMotionFinished() method that you can call when the motion for each tween instance has completed:

also, if you want to trigger an animation independently, you can use setTimeout to call the start of a function:
