layered ai to psd

From time to time when I export out a layered ai file as a psd (with "preserve layers and editability" clicked) Photoshop flattens some of the layers.
Anyone run into this? Any particular cause and possible solutions to avoid this situation?

when i export to psd i usually move all the elements in a sub layer to a layer of its own.
and also, i may be wrong here, if you use transparencies or layer blending can cause the layers to merge

thx diji. my guess was either a mask or a transparency effect causing illy to brain fart and just merge it all.
I'll try streamlining like you said.

Can be tricky. If the above doesn't work rasterize all your graphics and it'll work fine.
