if you use stock material in your own productions it's fine, however you might want to contact that designer for an extended copyright license.

haha. I'm just thinking of things like using a song in a video piece, or historic black/white footage... just experimental video stuff that won't be sold, but technically a portfolio is used to bring in business.
i know everyone does it. i'm not worried, just wondering if anyone knew definitively if it's ok or not.

techinically it is commercial.
well, maybe not so much if its personal, for employers to be viewed.
if you are a registered company it is most likely a NO NO.

Is a portfolio piece considered "commercial purpose"? Obviously if I used copyrighted material and sell it, it's a violation. But what about for something that will only ever be a piece in your portfolio?
