I have never been able to figure this out.
In Illy, when you are using the text tool, and finished typing- how do you switch back to the arrow, or hand, or anything, without having to click in the tool bar? Looking for a hot key.

i usually just hold the command key and click the page.

been doing the same as Gucci for years. it does bug me though, that you cannot hot-key straight to the direct arrow tool.

(Dec 14 06, 14:35)if you have the direct select tool selected before you type, it goes straight to the direct select tool.
you can always hotkey to the direct select tool by hitting 'a'.

press ctrl+enter to stop editing the text and switch to the selection tool. also works in photoshop.

ctrl+enter requires both hands on your keyboard, hence it's uneconomical (assuming you're right-handed).
