my last studio gig WOULD was a dream job...
... the boss 'made' us play and experiment with each other... there were even days when some of the guys gave full-blown 'art' and painted... or worked on personal stuff...... but... as it turns out - the boss was also a sex addict and was out of his mind..... he just got out jail...... again...
... so... um... I'm going to answer 'yes' to your 'am I asking for too much/dream job' scenario... :)

I think the only you are going to get what you want is to set aside a set amount of time (years) and work your ass of to grow a business. When you have all your office managers, designers programmers etc... hired, you can set your own schedule and only come in to make sure everything is running well and go to networking events to get new business. The rest of the time do what you want.
This is a pretty lofty goal but the only way to do what you want is to own it all.

Piper, seems like you need a break to re-evaluate things, or just a vacation away from the constant grind and constant change you've been going through over the past year.
I'm usually perpeutually happy due to some genetic flaw, however, I do find that if you try and focus more of your time on "happy" things or things that make you happy outside of work, and while at work, try not to focus on teh stuff you do not like, or negative things about work (where possible), you kind of get out of a funk.
Rarely is anything completley one-sided.
Take a few steps back and look at the whole picture.
Chin up buddy!

pony-
i have enjoyed my freelancing time, the money is fantastic, the destruction of egos is left with the full timers, i can make my own schedule and enjoy my time.
a pair of headphones is all you need with a music player offcourse...
also maybe a new kind of design job is what you need...surround yourself with more and exciting designers and grab the jobs you want rather than just settling for the paycheck.
a good attitude and good people that surround you will help you achieve your bliss you are missing.
also a nice joint in the mornings can allieviate any and all issues you have had previously.
oh yeh, in my line of work you can still freelance and travel abroad overseas for work on their dollar.
fun fun!!!
dream job, i doubt it, but im having fun and i like it.

(Dec 6 06, 12:08)I think that's why I've been at my job so long. It's kind of curtailed me from the dreams I had for myself... haha.
