Hey piperboytoy,
Man your in exactly the same spot as me! I used to freelance all the time doing small creative jobs, but no great amounts of cash, but at least I enjoyed my work.
For money, and portfolio (same as you) I started at an agency doing big projects for large corporate companies, and I HATED IT!
I couldn't afford to go back to freelance (rent, bills, booze etc..). So I found a happy medium... I negotiated with my agency (ran in one day with dynamite strapped to me!)... and I now work for the same agency only 3 days-a-week, for a guaranteed paycheck each month, which takes the risk out of freelancing, and I freelance the rest of the time!
Pretty cool eh, and yeah I guess I jumped into the unknown and got lucky, but at least I tried.
Just a thought mate... there's light at the end of the tunnel! Good luck :)

my last studio gig WOULD have been a dream job...
... the boss 'made' us play and experiment... there were even full-blown 'art' days were some of the guys just showed up and painted... or worked on personal stuff...
... but... as it turns out - the boss was also a meth addict and was out of his mind..
... he just got out jail...
... again...
... so... um... I'm going to answer 'yes' to your 'am I asking for too much/dream job' scenario... :)

I used to think I wanted a career. Then I realized I just wanted a paycheck.

well, i wanted more big brand experience and would like to work abroad. with freelancing i do more creative and smaller projects but not much work with any recognizable brands.

I just believe I don't like working in general. So I found a place where I don't have to interact with the public at all, except to have meetings with co-workers sometimes, and I'm going pretty well. It's not too bad at all (except when I have huge amounts of work to do, of course, but that doesn't happen too often).

piperboy, why did you quit freelancing? because of the money?

my ideal would be a fine artist that is actually selling work. all day in the studio creating...
but i know i'd end up being a drunk.

Just rub one out in a bathroom stall whenever this wave of frustration sets in - you'll be free of worry for about 1 1/2 hours if you're like most guys.
- piperboytoy0
yeah i guess so.

try an occupational hypnotherapist. Maybe he can make you think you were fishing all day, instead of being at work.
