I recently ran across a composer (maybe 18th century I can't remember) who wrote out his sheet music in these beautiful graphic sheet music pieces that looked like abstract art, they did not stay within the confines of music scales and they were quite abstract and really cool looking. Does anyone know this composer's name? Thanks in advance!

Ah I get to use my music degree here. The three Witt mentioned are the three biggies as for as graphic notation goes.
However, I lean toward George Crumb as my favorite. The other guys, although they are geniuses, had scores which can be very difficult for a performer to decipher, thus rendering the basic point of notation moot. Crumb on the other hand, is (he is still alive too) masterful at creatng hybrid scores. Combining many traditional notation techniques with graphic techniques that are so natural and beautiful, that they are very easy to read and follow. Look for the score to "Black Angels" (the only sting quartet written about Vietnam btw). Stunning.

It's interesting actually. With MIDI you can make your music illustrate.
Infinite possibilities. The next line of apps will do such. We're primitive.
