i think it is for advanced image readers that detect the text of the image to distinguish it as spam, the same as those "enter code here" things when subscribing to some service like myspace hotmail, godaddy etc
since the scanner can't detect text, it must be a picture of your girlfriend or something

they are dynamically generated images basically using the authentication thing version said, only in reverse. they assign a certain number of parts/pieces to the library and then based on taking your email route and indexing that across a shit load of repositories, or searches, throw crap back at you that might have the least percentage of not being marked spam from previous attempts.
they crash your email client sometimes as thisis the image being contructed dynamically and the client does not like it.
