    ...backup your email before reformatting your mac?

    i'm about to do a total slash 'n' burn on my system and would appreciate any tips...

    If you have IMAP then you may not need to worry about it, but the data is stored in your user library folder in a directory called Mail. After formatting, in the past, I've been able to just dump the contents of this folder into place and all the mail will be intact. It's been a while, but I think you'll have to set up your account(s) from within Mail first.
