Hey, I'm designing a website, and I want to have one large image in the background (not a flash site). The image needs to fit every/most screen resolution (i.e. 1024x768 - 1280x1024 - 1600x1200 etc), but there's so many!
What size should I have the background image?? Anyone done this before? And also what format would you save it (jpeg, gif etc...)
Thanks :)

probably best get a bit clever with it fading out or having a solid bit of colour at one edge or something to bleed into a background colour - could still be pretty slow o load even as a jpg if you have to account for bastards like me with 1600x1200 resolutions...

you'll need to either scale the image proportionately to the bwoswer (if you can do that with html?) or tile the image.
ours is flash, 1024x768 images, they scale well, and all load individually. jpegs compressed with fireworks.

kelpieAh S**T! What do you think most people will have their screen res set at?
...I generally design sites to be optimised for 1024x768, but stll small enough to be viewed at 800x600... But I've always used tiled backgrounds, I've never had to have one image before, to consider larger resolutions! It causes all sorts of problems!
*shakes fist

Ok ok... ignore my previous questions...
If you wanted an image sized 1024x768 in the background of a web page, what file format would you save it as (in Photoshop)... obviously so it loads as quickly as possible without losing too much quality??

Well that all depends on what the image is. If it's a photograph then you obviously want a JPG. The quality would then depend on what you think you can get away with. 60% would be a good place to start, and adjust as necessary. Make sure to Save For Web so you get all the different options and what not.
