i was about to mention that. seems like it's a good solution as many people also seem to prefer newest first.
and what about pagination.. is this preferred over say having an exhaustive list of comments?

+ exhaustive list
+ submission order toggle

Interesting! But what about when there are 10 pages of comments and you want to see what the latest comments are? Does it then become annoying to see oldest first?

-if you arrive to a new page why would you want to see the latest first? it's as random as looking for the old ones.
if you go back to check replies or see if someone posted after you it doesn't mean that you know where your initial comment is. could be in the fifth page, eg. - and then you are completely lost.
if you use old-to-new, you know where your comment is.

I suppose the question is whether:
1) you want to see where a discussion currently is first, then explore its roots
or
2) you want to start at the beginning and work your way to current

I'm the kind of guy who wants it all...
- ludawg0
thanks for the feedback!
- Witt0
maybe it depends on what kind of forum it is and the expected level of user experience to the point that it matters or not, but by principle, old-to-new is more intuitive to me.
reverse is reverse.
-- to those ^ who want it all, add a random switch as well!

You're a sick, sick fuck.
Really.
What did I ever do to you?

what d-error said.
the logic of any discussion is, literally, subsequential and deductive (A to B).
Other options can be useful depending what the argument os trying to find:
