It couldn't be for PC since there was no photoshop for windows until version 2.5 (still pre layers). Back in those days Adobe and Apple were chums.
I've used PS 1 from an early beta—that version only supported RGB, had no layers, but still, at the time, was a revelation.
Also, at the time, we used Ill 88 and freehand 1. When they started, Freehand was much better than illy, but they kinda lost focus somewhere around version 4. Another cool app at the time was Videoworks, Director's ancestor. I still have two old mac +s and a 2CI (the only mac that was trully expandable, making it useful for some 8 years) with a 12" monitor. it was doing millions of colors when most PCs still had 16.

(Nov 16 06, 14:47)Hahah yea, the undo shit that only works one back has always pissed me off. History Pallette seems like so much work.

and not always convenient or accurate, but to its credit I can see how ram is the real issue here

I started with Photoshop 2.0 in school, which was almost as bad. With no layers, you had paste controls where you had to decide everything in terms of opacity, etc. right then and there. Text gave you a selection on screen. You could move it until you delected, then you were done. You just had to save multiple versions of images to get work done.
I also started with Illustrator 3.2. You had no gradients and had to create path blends manually to get that effect.
