Those 4 dont' add up to 87 cents.
- doesnotexist0
wasnt those four that were mailed. those were the block that were sold for $3mil i believe, right?
and yeah prolly some guy in a retirement home dippin into his stamp collection. yikes!
- gabe0
one of those things i'll never understand...
what the hell makes a stamp (or a baseball card, or a sori yanagi soy sauce pitcher) worth a gazillion dollars? just because some idiot will pay an arm and a leg for it?
some ancient armor worn by a japanese emperor—ok, sure, throw an extravagant price tag on it. but a freaken stamp???
- ********0
Exclusivity. The less there is of something, the more expensive it is, as long as it is in a medium where someone will pay absorbant amounts of money to claim the rights to owning it.
- GreedoLives0
at least stamps have a value, they're a sort of monetary instrument. unlike baseball cards.

something is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it. The more people that want it the more the price might escalate. Hence all those ebay auctions where people pay for than the brand-new value for a second hand item. There needs to be some sort of logic that comes in at some point and says 'this is just stupid'

damn, I posted that twice, now it's not worth as much...
- doesnotexist0
so true
- Concrete0
I'll give you 50 euros for both threads!
- gabe0
yeah, i understand the concept of supply and demand...
i suppose my question was more rhetorical than anything else.

you're not buying a "rare stamp", you're buying self worth and admiration from other stamp collectors
in our subculture you pay extra for a mediatemple logo on your site
same thing
- ********0
haahaha nice analogy.
- radar0
