maybe i'm stupid, but: I want a text on a circle path. thats ok. Then I want to apply gradient this way: at the start of text is black, at the end is white, so it it "fades out". But it has to be driven by the text flow... or some other example: I have a path with two anchors, the first one is start point, the second one is end point (like in some 3D applications). Start point would define start (black) of the gradient and end point its end (white). Any suggestions? It does not necessarily have to work this way of course.

gradients on curves aren't easy, but not impossible.
check out gradient mesh tool and object > blend. one of those will do what you need

or you can cheat: make a circle, cut it in halves, then apply a gradient form 100% black to 50% black to one half and 50% to 0% to the another. and then make clipping mask to the text.

or you can do the gradient in PS and place it to illy and then -> clipping mask

if you need the text to remain editable, you could draw a box with a gradient, place it behind your text, select the text and the box, and make a clipping mask. it'll look something like what ETM posted, but you'll be able to change the text if you need to.

elms with those halfs is close to it, I tried it before my post even with quarters. It seems it is not possible to do it without any tricks, which is unfortunately bad, because the idea was to remain the text editable (text is all around the circle, like stamp). but thank you all anyway

i really hope adobe includes contour and logarithmic gradients from freehand in illy cs3. this was one of the nicest features fh ahd going for it.

! can I do this in Freehand? I tried it years ago, so I can't remember. I'll try again, thanks for your note.

if its not too much text, why not make every letter on its own text path and apply the gradient seperately to every letter. maximum control that way.
