Has anyone here done this? Does registering a domain first or that and adding a tm symbol to your logotype count for anything as far as protecting the name? The uspto.gov site is such a user 'un'friendly site btw.

no such thing
registering a domain doesnt have much to do with protecting a trademark. TM just signifies that you are prepared to assert your rights on your (unregistered) trademark, not to be confused with trademark registration.
theres 3 seperate areas:
- copyright law
- trademark/IPR law
- domain registration

Pretty confusing. The trademark site doesn't help to clarify anything. There is web related conference using a name that I have owned the exact domain name of for years. I have been planning the details of a web related business and other info and services under that name.

what do you really want to do? how are they stopping you from doing it?

tm is to assert the authenticity of a product you're selling. designers use it as a gadget, it doesn't protect anything.
if you want to protect your name you have to (r) nationally (cheap) or internationally (expensive)
i'm in the EU but i think it's the same in the US

you dont have to register your trademark... it's just easier to take action against infringers if its registered

the only reason for registering, in my opinion, is to ensure that you have a date and gov't proof that you own the name/design.
but wouldnt the presence of original, dated files replace that?

Registering what? (I think we're mixing up copyright and trademark in this topic...)
