so, say everyone was to stop buying CDs and switch to downloads exclusively. what is the environmental impact of all those PCs and server farms and the materials and energy they require?

Good article, acescence - this is why I've been trying to buy all music as downloads for the past year or so.
Makes it easier moving around too - CDs are so goddamned bulky. And they t get scratched/lost/ pilfered/dirty/degraded.

A musical collection of 50% compressedquality JPGs? 128kbps garbage??? NEVER!!! >:(

CD's and DVD's are good for backing everything up and keeping for use later on. It's better to have multiple copies of everything, and on an external HD if you want too.
As for music, I stopped buying CD's a few years ago since I don't own a stereo system and I rarely use any CD's in a car.

you burn energy either way, at least by downloading you minimize the use of energy consumed ;)

AOL could take a tip or two from this idea...
... i have more AOL 'frisbees' in my home... behind the dresser, under the desk... in the cat's litter box I think...
... I will miss throwing CD's and DVD's...
