Building an online community

My buddy wants to build an online community where users create their own page ans space very similar to myspace.
Does anyone have any experience with this? Know any companies that could build something like this? Anyone have any idea on the cost or time it would take to build a myspace like community?

2 things:
1- a former partner of mine is doing the same thing, and he found a PHP guy to set up the backend for like 3-4K
2- does your friend have a unique spin on the whole 'community site like myspace' thing? i'd make sure there's a valid business opportunity wrapped into his idea before he coughs up cash to build something that's being super over-done

thanks for the response. I think his idea is actually a very unique and interesting. I agree with what you wrote, I warned him that sites like these are showing up everywhere.

If he has no experince in this field he is a very brave man...
You should really know what your doing in terms of capability, and maintenance, let's hope he's got deep pockets.
