Having recently had my wonderful friend and buddy - my 2yr old Ridgeback Velocity, stolen¹, I'm now in the market for a new bike - does anyone have any recommendations? I'm thinking another Ridgeback, but I quite like Scott bikes too.
Or, at least, a good one-stop shop to peruse lots of models.
Price range:
>=£425-ishRequests:
No fork shocks (I think they're pansy), sleekish looks, European-made/designed (ideally, though not specifically). Buyable in London, preferably North (so I can cycle back, big stupid smile on face). Also, if someone can recommend a not-too heavy über lock and relevant insurance plan, that might be useful :\

I think I meant 'City Road' blah blah rather than 'Commuter' blah blah.
I'm no commuter, see?
One needs a career and prospects to be a commuter.
I'm just a bum.
A bum without a bike.

I hate cyclists.
What an ungainly method of getting from a to b. You all think you're above traffic lights, run into people at crossings, get on the train with the bike (what's that about huh? Cycle if you're gonna), and your asses stick out. You look ridiculous. People don't want you bikes - we just throw them in the thames - preferably with the rider still on it.You're better than car drivers though. They're the worst...

and here i thought it was thursday today...

I agree with your comment about cyclists on trains - but really, moth - if you saw my dainty ass swishing side to side in tight lycra, you'd be an instant convert.
Wherever I cycle, I have a train of enthusiasts riding behind me, in my slipstream - feasting off the wonder that is my tight, luscious ass.
It's like a beacon of hope.

It's at times like this I begin regretting derailing so many other people's threads.

y'know. just that moth's initial response felt more like a tuesday response to me...

Am I that predictable?

i thought so, but apparently not.

She's a beaut, Bluejam, thanks! How're you finding those disc brakes? When I went to my bike shop to ask about upgrading to them (I thought they looked cool, I'm dumb that way) they just looked at me like I was an idiot.
Monoboy - do you have one? I kind of liked them when they first came out, but was never sure whether I could ride one without feeling like a pillock - that said, I really like their integrated lock concept, that's sublime.

Oh. The Puma bike has no gears.
I need gears.
I'm like a thin fat man - deeply unhealthy. Gears are essential to my continued existence.

"How're you finding those disc brakes?"
they do the job, especially in the rain, i love 'em

Get the Copenhagen or MN (Marc Newson) Both slick bikes..
The Brooklyn bike looks fun too, but not for commuting
- Nairn0
Cül schtuff - they said they were a bit strong for city riding, but I wondered why that should be - for me, brakes that work in the rain and don't need constant ..um.. squishing (to get water off) sounds like a great idea.
And they Look Cool.
- Nairn0
Oooh, they look real sweet, designerror - maybe a little too expensive? What I wouldn't give to own a piece of Marc Newsom design though, if I could. Despite not really liking that one. The Copenhagen model's a beauty.
They don't appear to sell in the UK either.
- designerror0
just buy it via Ireland and bike home!
$999 is a bit expensive I agree...
the Newson bike is somewhere in the £4000 area... but it's sooooo sweet!

I'm thinking of buying one, not sure what they're like to cycle.
