Hello Folks
I am having some trouble with my new display, a hp 19" moniter and my g4 tower mac.
When i turn them on the moniter displays the apple and spinning thing below then about 15 seconds later the resolution changes and the moniter tells me it cannot accept the input. (even though it just did)
The moniter i used before had a higher refresh rate and so i am guessing this is causing trouble. however that moniter is broken and doesn't turn on so i can not go into the preferences and change it.
Any ideas how i can sort this out?
any help would be much appreciated.
thanks

Dang, I had this problem on an old beige G3 and a crappy monitor. I had to use a different monitor to set the res to something lower with a lower refresh rate cause seemed like the monitor wouldn't support higher settings.
Could you borrow a better monitor from a friend, just to set the default to something lower?

At the moment i cannot borrow another moniter.... hmmm...
Thanks for your help. Any other ideas?

you should check out monitors... they work a little better than moniters

Hmmm, I think I even tried to hook it to a TV just to see the desktop to change settings. The beige G3 had composite out, but I can't remember if it worked or not. Seems like that isn't possible on G4 though.

if you have another mac, you can mount the g4 with target disk mode and find the com.apple.windowserver.plist file in /Library/Preferences/ and delete it. or if you're feeling brave, you can open it and edit the settings yourself.
