haven't seen it. but from what most people are saying it sounds like a visual essay on frivolity.

anyway. from what i've read, the thing is that critics are taking opportunity on this film to establish a milestone between generations. I mean, Sofia Coppola comes from our generation (?) and they are trying to establish what of it is visual flateur (pity NT doesn't allow italics) and serious (italic) knowledge. Since it's obviously the first ambitious film from a person under 30 yrs old (and giving her upbringing), this movie has been expected as a meta-film.
I sincerely don't know if that's a fair game - but that's what the establishment is trying to do.

"Coppola and Cast Talk Modernizing Marie Antoinette
“What I was trying to do was make it impressionistic of what it would feel like to live there at that time,” she said. “I wanted it to be a style of acting and the setting is as natural as possible and that that’s the real place as opposed to an artificial movie set. So in that way it was the style we were working from. But then we take artistic license in altering things to convey more what it would feel like at that time, using music that gives the emotional quality that I wanted the scene to have as opposed to what actually might be the song [of the time]. A combination to create the impression of what it might have been like.”"

(Oct 23 06, 15:23)lol, I was actually doing a mini study of that while taking the bus this morning. I have yet to see a non-Asian typeface for a chinese restaurant in my city...

I enjoyed the film. The 80's music made it feel like less of a period piece to me, which I liked.
Did anyone else notice the converse all-stars in the shoe scene, or am I losing my mind?
