Dear NT,
What are/is the best FREE software for burning cds on iMACs? I know that Toast is the gold standard, but that is last resort.
Thanks,

burn it from the operating system

you should be able to put the blank cd into the drive, the imac recognizes it's blank, it should ask you if you want to name it, then, double click on the cd icon and drag your files into/onto it.
you should see a little icon that looks like a radioactive yellow and black thingy. click that and it burns the cd.

iTunes and iPhoto also have CD-burning built-in

thanks nt. but it seems that the built-in app is problematic as well. i think it may be related to the quality of cds (current hypothesis). they were using maxell cds and then putting labels on them. but since paper labels can cause slight wabbling in the cd drive, this may have been the root of their original problem.
they then moved to Universal which has a slight film of a label on the cd. this now to is having prooblems burning.
they then used burnx and it worked fine but it is now causing repeatable problems on differing machines.
this is where i am at. any info would be great. but hey, software costs money, which none of seem to have...

well sounds like you dont have a software problem... how about testing with a quality CD blank?

(Oct 19 06, 15:12)that's what I'm thinking. but perhaps other people are having problems with their iMac's here....

I've had no problems burning with my iMac. I've used really shitty quality CD's, high quality CD's and everything in between.
Only ever used the OS burning too.
Sounds like hardware to me. Either that or your crap ;)
