We are trying to install the latest versions of PHP and mySQL. The problem is we can't seem to connect to the BD through PHP. Are we missing some extension or setting somewhere?

it requires the php_mysql module for php to talk to mysql.
additionally, make sure that mysql is running. you can do this by attempting to run the mysql client from the command line.

Am I looking for a table title mySQL with support and directive info or something else?

The guy who is installing it is a really smart developer. He actually installed the proper extensions, etc.
The issue was with the open source software we used. It won't allow you to install if you use a database password. Stupid illogical problem.

check your php.ini file to ensure you have things enabled, and also do the phpinfo() as suggested before

So just for future reference is the 'php_mysql module' an extension set in the ini file?

Yes, it's an extension in the php.ini that you'll need to enable if you want to use mysql & php. If you're installing on a Windows box, make sure that there is no semicolon in front of "extension=php_mysql.dll"

the modules are usually on lines commented out, all you should need to do is uncomment them
