So. I'm faced with something I have not before. A company wants me to come up with a name for their undisclosed "tech" product...how do you charge for that? Any thoughts? I mean, the name is pretty important, but it can come to you in 1 second, or 1 month.

could be big bucks based on the market of said company. there's definitely a science to it.

Hey thanks for the link. I think it'll come in handy.
I'm really baffled as to what I should quote though.

rule of thumb is generally the most you think they'll pay!

I was working in-house for a major corporationa few years back as a designer, aka they own everything I think / do while I'm there.
Long story short, in a meeting w/ upper management they were ready to outsource the namoig of a new major product.
At the time I blurted out a name I had been toying with. Of course they used it and loved it.
Now every time I see that name being used on TV I kick myself. They were paying me shit and they are still getting mileage out of that name.
moral = charge what seems to be ridiculous, and like digity says, the most you thik you can get!

if they're asking you for *their* name, do a great job and get great buck$.

Have them pay a flat fee for a list of (your) names, then a much larger fee if they choose to use one of them.
This will require a contract.
