I'm trying to not sound like a complete idiot to a client. My first print job for a newspaper and they are coming at me with these dimensions:
3 col. x 5in
6 col. x 3in
6 col. x 5 in
Do I need to ask what their column width is?

yes, there are tons of different sizes.

yeah, always confirm col. width they can vary greatly.

If you want to sound in the know, ask them for a PDF of their "rate card". All papers have one, and it describes all of the ad specs for any given sheet.

Dot gain is for real (as newsprint soaks ink like a sponge.
Most cannot hold anything below a 10% dot. So the ends of gradients will drop to white quickly.
