force quit.

sounds like a problem i have had before, ended up being a font issue. try starting up font book and seeing if there are any conflicts between similiar fonts (system v installed).
second going to apple forums, great resource

hi barbtastic
My system fonts seem to be seperate:
HD/system/library/fonts:
17 fonts (d_fonts)
and a bunch of Japenese looking fonts.should I open each one and reinstall???
or is there a list I should havethanks so much
I've stopped crying now

aliceblue-
I am unable to send you the fonts now [i'm at work], but when i get home i can send you clean files. fonts tend to get corrupt for no reason at all, so i keep archives of "clean" fonts.. i will explain it all later tonight when i email....

linotype fontexplorer x has a utility for cleaning font caches - handy in these situations
- aliceblue0
acescence - I have FontBook:-(
(is that bad?)

aliceblue-
if you are a designer and using lots of fonts, you really shoud get a 3rd party font manager, and use fontbook to only to manage your system fonts.

barbtasticyeah I kinda though so ... maybe I should get the linotype one?
but I do think I've done something in "resolve duplicates" that kinda f*kd things up.
AND my hardrive is 6 years old!

fontbook can, and does, do weird things with your font caches. ms office, in particular, does not get along well with fontbook. you can fix these problems by manually clearing font caches, but it's easier with an app that will do it for you. plus, it's a better app than fontbook in many other ways, so you win all around.
oh yeah, and it's free!

download and run this.. should fix your garbled text.
Font Cache Cleaner/ Font Finagler

(Oct 13 06, 11:12)if you're HD is gonna die from old age it'll just stop spinning and die.
run Disk Utility/ First Aid on it if you're really concerned. you'll need to boot from DVD if its your startup disk.
but really this sounds like a system problem to me.
