is it acceptable to use percentages of font sizes when sending a print piece to a service bureau?

percentage? if you mean like 8.5 pt rather than 8, yes its ok.
8.54287199473 pt would be ok too.

I thought so but I was just reading through this "designer checklist" at my new job and they wrote "fonts should be normal sized, not 9.071". I was wondering if that's just their policy because I've nver had a problem before.

(Oct 10 06, 11:33)This place is not clean! I went from working at a global company with the nicest cubes and bathrooms ever to a plywood desk in a warehouse.
Plus they use a bunch of destressed and hand writen fonts that I'm sure a fraction isn't going to throw off the consistancy but I'm not going to ruffle any feathers yet.

it probably has nothing to do with anything

They probably use MS Word to typeset...
"Once we got this weird file and we couldn't open it in word...!"
