Yes this is a samey argument, but I think it's still worthwhile...
Clicking on the links posted by phatlee in the "List of Firms" thread below, there are a scarily large amount of studios and firms who use simple, gridded Helvetica on their site.
I just can't see how so many people can say "this is what I really want for my site". It seems to be the ultimate way of saying nothing but trying to stay cool whilst doing it.

The point of those sites is not the site, but the work shown on it, yes?

yes, but thats like saying the point of a book is the words, not the way it's displayed. Yes, the work on the site is the most important thing. And yes the words in a book are the most important part of the content, but come on....using Helvetica over and over and over - in a conscious way, because it is a conscious decision - is so so safe. It pushes nothing. It just "is". But moreover, people think it's ok to do this. After seeing 30 sites with it all the same, it can get very monotonous

That book analogy makes no sense.

the book analogy only makes sense if you're talking about a book that is a portfolio book, in which case a simple type on white page would probably be a great approach

Most clients/users won't notice the font your using, unless you give them a choice and ask them which they like better.
I've never had one say, you know I don't like that font, could you use xxxxxx.
