Fair call harlequino I am by no means saying my argument is at all infallable. It's just this frustration I feel and am not quite writing as succintly or as focused as one would want..

Ain't no thang.
My guess is you are most frustrated with the invasive marketing arm that goes with putting a film out there, and can sully the entire piece.
Believe me, filmmakers are no more pleased with that aspect. My guess is that Jonze is driven to make this film out of the same reverence for the material that you have.

i do hate books based on movies! yes they do exist!
there's a really hyped dutch movie out here now, and i have not seen it yet.
a few days ago i saw the book in the bookstore and i thought, "nice! i haven't seen the movie so i'd love to read the book first!", only to find out what was written on the cover:
"based on the movie ..."
grrr!!!!

I think Spike Jonze is the heart of the problem. Spike Jonze doesn't have a narrative voice. His music videos are 100% situation with no story. Sure, that's what most videos are but that's the world he comes from.
Spike Jonze is all imagination without inspiration.
However, Dave Eggers is writing the movie and that's interesting.
