i am just thinking your towel is in some weird super-absorbant state in which it sucks all humidity out of the air and collects it. thus it will never dry, but get only wetter and wetter until it is gonna stink and stain.. after a few more months you may be able to see the first 'shrooms growing on it! :D

The same thing happened to my iBook a few months ago. I woke up to find it (and the coffee table) covered in water. We do get leaks from the flat upstairs - but the ceiling was completly dry, and the leaks were the other side of the room.
The iBook has since died.
The water is unsoloved.

possible answer:
is there an extractor fan above where your towels are hung?
as its getting slightly cooler outside now , you might be getting a buildup of condensation on the extractor exit pipe. then while you are away at work it all decides flow back into your bathroom.
happens sometimes in the winter to me.
