Is it possible? If so, how?

open the pdf in illustrator and save it as an ai file.

Open in Illustrator > save as .ai

copy icon into photoshop. erase the "pdf" part of the name and replace it with "ai"

Usually you can just rename the extensions to .ai and it will open in Illustrator. (not sure on a mac)
