lappy is getting too hot and just needed to cool down?
maybe put in a surge protector? Seems unlucky to have 3 failures...

i have a massive surge, i had been gone all day at my office and just got on it at home. it was on but not running.

its called a "kernel panic" if you want to do some research.
do you take good care of your macs? power off via shutdown? repair permissions regularly? clean install your OS with major upgrades (like 10.3-10.4)? software all installed correct and running smooth? any funky old hardware/ peripherals that may be causing a conflict... ?

"A kernel panic can be caused by damaged or incompatible software or, more rarely, damaged or incompatible hardware..."

and after that, boot it up from the os x cd and run disk first aid on it, see if it tells you something.

Kernel Panic –
Cool name for a band

its strange.
in the 2 years i had my powerbook,
nothing happened to it..and i'm the worst computerowner.
hd is chaos, it fell a few time, never shut it down... and still goes strong..nifty little machine.
my new macpro will have to prove itself ;)

I just got a macbook pro a few days ago and had the kernel panic right after I did the firewire transfer of old information from my tower to the new macbook pro. I end up doing a full reinstall and did not go the computer to computer route. There is quite a bit of system stuff that does not work with the macbook pro. I assume mine had to do with all the third party system preferences I have. Compatibility on the software end is most likely the cause. Make sure to backup everyday.

(Sep 27 06, 20:45)Good post.
Either your very unlucky or you just dont treat your computers very well.
But then again thats like saying your football team is either going to win, lose or draw.
So i'll stfu.

My New macbook pro, after the death of my powerbook is only a few months old, its basically been on my desk since the day i took it out of the box, there have only been 4 times ive had to take it somewhere and im extremely careful with all my equipment, clean installs clean erase the data on this macbook pro, is all clean no weird software or files or anything... its just very unnerving, and sad. since my last crash ive been backing up daily.

(Sep 28 06, 03:47)i'll agree with this 100%. i've been using an ibook at home for over a year with no problems... ever. i've never even seen the mac screen of death.
same thing with my mbp here at work. no problems.
better luck to you in the future man and take care of your puter.
oh... oh oh. i will say though. the intern here has been having problems with her g5. running hot, freezing, shitting the bed and such. i was talking with her about it the other day and she's never shut it down, never restarted, and when i searched for updates an entire SLEW of them came up... she never updates the thing either. i had to give her 'mac 101' and now it's running smooth as a whistle.

Yep Ive owned two ibooks, a powerbook, an imac g5 and a mac mini and not one of them has ever given me a problem other than the odd program freeze for like 5-10 seconds. Very reliable machines - all of them.
I guess you (thread starter) must just be one damn unlucky son of a bitch : (

Still using a Titanium Powerbook 800MHZ, only had 1 kernel panic in 4 years and that was when I pulled a printer USB out while it was waking from sleep (pressed power basically as I pulled it out) still runs great, although the battery finally died last week but thats easily replaceable and was inevitable.
Excellent machine
