Fontspiracy?

Someone just sent me an email saying that installing Open Type typefaces can be a huge security hole:
" Adobe no longer sells PS Type 1 fonts. It now sells OT fonts. OpenType fonts permit of encrypting and embedding hidden private buyer data, e.g. postal and email address, bank account number, credit card number etc. When you are connected to the internet, it is easy for online shops to spy out your private data by reading the fonts installed on your computer. In this way, online shops also obtain email addresses for spamming purposes. "
I don't buy it, but anyone hear about this?

sounds like a bunch of garbage, but an easy way to find out...

oh you say read, not phone home. i should read stuff first.

Sounds like someone who has a vendetta against OT. Is his name Bill Troop?
Yes, you can embed personal data in an OT font. But you can in a PS font too.
The format of the font has very little to do with security. What matters is where you shop. Buy from a reputable font seller with a sound privacy policy and there is no cause for concern.

Thanks Typographica...

I'm curious about the source. Can you divulge?

I'll email my friend back and see where he got it from...

Ah, yes, Uli Stiehl. He's full of BS about 50% of the time. The UPS story is true, though.

Speaking of OpenType, does anyone remember the thread last week in regards to Rand's question about PostScript/OpenType differences.
And Typographica linking a wonderful script font with his referral link attached?
I saved the wrong link in my del.icio.us account.

speak of the devil, I can't figure out how the hell to access the special characters from within the Pro (OT) version, so I've loaded the regular PS version as well. And what is "Super Pro"? That seems the same as Zaner One

Spank ya very much!!!

Typographica, if clicking that link and then manuevering to buy the whole family on another page still give you the referral?

Rand, the special characters would be ALT+0 combinations I believe.
Open up Character Map (or whatever Apple People use... forgive me if ALT+0 doesn't work there either, however you would make like a ™ symbol).

looks like you need InDesign CS2
pfft--why'd I buy the pro version?

Der... Scratch that, I'm not sure. I realised my problem I had similar to this was with a Cyrillic Font not having its characters show up unless I used the exact combination to bring those characters up.
Mite be similar. :X
There should be a .PDF that came with the Pro Package as kind of a Legend.

Flavah - I think it will save the refer no matter how long you browse, or even if you leave the site, as long as you don't click on someone's else's link with a refer tag. Thanks for the support!
Rand - What app are you using to set Zaner? OT depends quite a bit on application support. We all need to start writing letters to Microsoft (and to a lesser extent, Adobe) to fully support the font format that THEY CREATED.

I'm using InDesign CS, but it looks like the OT goodies only work with CS2
