Start with a small amount of savings, enough to pay your bills for 2-3 months. That way you have a safety net while you are getting it all rolling.
*Purchase at least one case of your favorire ramen noodles.

Seriously though...
Keep a log of EVERYTHING you do if you're charging by the hour... it's easy to loose track of all those fiddly little changes you get asked to do on projects, and they add up when it comes to invoicing.
