I think I will hire someone to work with me during that I'm just an infant regarding design.Luckily, I don't have too too high expectations.

I think the laptop comment probably pissed folk off, it puts you in mind of those after school dezign kids who do awful websites for £300 and rob a good pro of a fee...
Self study is a totaly valid way of learning, you just have to be a total magpie for designed things - hoard examples of every type of design you can find, graphic, web, spatial blah blah.
start with your eyes, your brain and a few good books, then move onto the laptop.
Like Karate Kid, you have to paint a few fences and wash a few cars before you can know how to kick the shit out of people.

Get a subscription to a design magazine like Grafik. Take photos of nice design you see outside. Keep a scrap/sketchbook. Make things out of wood and stuff. Follow sites like www.manystuff.com and www.vvork.com , buy some design books. Just generally try and develop an eye for good design, an appreciation for aesthetics and problem solving.
Also, www.designerstoolbox.com has CD Sleeve templates if you ever get to that point.

honestly, some of the clients ive had in the past, if i showed them that and told them that it was a reduced version and not actual size, theyd probably tell me that it didnt help them visualise what it WOULD be like at full size.
