For international flights; can you take allong hard-drives in your carry-on? Is that allowed? The data on them is very important, so would they do anything that could damage them?

should be fine. they might make you take it out of the bag and run it through the x-ray separately, like they do with laptops.

i had cameras equipment with me from heathrow to JFK. no problem. i had to go through 3 security checks in heathrow though.
you can carry on KY jelly with you in case of emergency, u know...
