Airport Express workaround?

Is there a way to get Airport Express to extend the range of a non-Apple wireless network? I need access in the room farthest from router and there's just no signal. It's not my house and I can't swap the router over to an Apple.
The Apple site plainly says you need either an Airport or Airport Extreme Base Station to extend the range using Airport Express but surely there must be some way round this?

It takes forever, but it can be done. You gotta call customer service. I had a really good PC networking guy try and do it and it just frustrated the hell out of him. Not sure what the final solution was, but I remember him saying something about the firewall password.
Good luck and try and stay calm.

Yeah I read something about networks using WEP passwords requiring a $ before them...

I'm just a bit wary of forking out $129 if I'm not going to be able to get it to work.

Yeah, I was getting a little upset about that too, but we finally got it going. It will work, it's just a matter of how much time and patience you have to figure it out w/ their customer service rep.
