be succesful without the right people around him/her? Does a good producer make a difference?
Are there any directors out there with any horror stories?

There's a TON to go wrong depending...Work (in any industry) is often a very political game when working with a group of people.
So if you are the only creative there and there's a stronger sales or business force leading the company...you may get dumped on.
People like to point fingers. People like to think they know it all. People don't appreciate design =(
So yes, I have horror stories, and I wasn't even the only creative there! I just had a staff of designers and they well, they had less say than I did! So to answer your question, yes you can be successful - BUT you have to have the freedom to do so and you have to be very political and very convincing...
Remember - other people within a company (be it a creative design firm, magazine, or otherwise) don't always know about the ins and outs of design. So you have to very delicately explain and compliment at the same time as to not insult or upset.
Being a politician is unfortunately part of your job.

the director needs all the best, experience team around him. a great, non-flaky producer is a must have. a great DP is another and last but not least a director needs a great editor to help keep the vision strong.
if any parts of the team are weak, the director will have to step in and help, pulling away time and effort from the tasks at hand to help with production, casting, DP work, etc...
given that lot's can go wrong in production, all the way from the director screwing up to having a shittay writer, it's a miracle sometimes for projects to get accomplished at all...
and yes i have horror stories, one going on right now. i think the only advice i can give as a director you must problem solve constantly and try and maintain your vision with a smile and despite all adversities that come your way - because it's a guarantee, they will be coming your way...

It depends on what director.
You can have the best team on the planet and still ruin it if the director sucks. So I guess it depends on the team, everyone contributes in order for the project to be succesfull..

without a kickass producer things would be heaps different around here thats for sure. if you happen to have or find one, hold on!

The best directors seem to form teams of people they can trust after a while...line producers, art directors, dp's, etc. I think it is virtually impossible to do high level work for high level (commercial) clients without a good team and a good production company backing of some sort. I mean, barring any friendships and such, how are you going to get a steady stream of decent commercial or music video work without good reps?
