Window > Brush Libraries. There's a selection there. (pr you can create a custom brush).

i don't know about illustrator cs, but in cs2 you can go up to effect -> stylize and find drop shadow, inner glow, and outer glow. i think they used inner glow in your example.

give it zero X-Y offset and use the blur to creep it in on all sides. and make sure it's set to Multiply.

or you can do it old skool and draw a smaller inner shape and do a point-to-point gradient blend with the blend tool. you can specify how many steps you want if you hold down option.

Effects/ 3D/ Extrude & Bevel/
Put "Extrude Depth" to zero "0".
Put bevel [from drop down] "Tall Round"
Put the "height" to something like 15 and preview.
this should work and give you the same look as gradient mesh tool and you can expand the appearance and manipulate unlike the gradiet mesh which cancels the shape that its on.
