so, whats the choice for a pair of computer speakers sans subwoofer?

if its for a computer at home, just get it linked up to your hifi. dont waste your time with crap 10watt comp speakers.
ive got an external soundcard rigged up to my laptop with optical out. connected up to the optical in of my hifi.
you get to hear the full crystal-clear clarity of the beautiful compression noises from mp3s lol.

hmmm. but hows the bass output? my damn neighbors bang on the floor if theres even a hint of bass... fackin apartments.

There should be a speaker line for California cardboard apartments, advertised "..beautiful, shallow, virtually unaudible bass.."

bass output is a lot cos its a normal hifi speakers.
you might find though, if you buy a speaker-set from a computer shop wheer you get two wee speakers and a bassbox, that the bassbox is "untruly" amplified - in most cases the bass will be emphasised more. so having that under your desk sitting on the floor booming away - may annoy your neighbours more than standard hifi speakers.

i put my speaker on empty mac packaging (boxes).. it eliminates the bass a bit, at least before it goes thru the floor..

i got new amp and speakers a few weeks ago, well, new to me! they're hand-me-downs.
my fellah installed them using my wardrobe as a sub-woofer. when i open the doors, the whole room shakes!

do the empty boxes not help the bass resonate??
best thing to stop bass rattling your floorboards is to get decent speaker stands. ones where only 3 or 4 spikes come into contact with the floor. they aint expensive.

in college once, my roommate and I rigged a set of headphones up to a traffick cone to use a walkman as a stereo. Wasn't very loud but it sounded great if you stuck your head in the cone. man.
