Anyone watch it on BBC 4 last night?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/mercu…
the Arctic Monkeys walked off with this years Mercury.
reckon its deserved? or a bit obvious?
i just discovered 'Hot Chip' the other week and im into them at the moment. and the thom yorke album is decent.
but the judges last night said the voting was based on the album alone. not the hype behind the bands or what theyve done in the past or what they will do in the future.
they said that the arctic monkeys album was full of belters and not a duff song on there (which is true) as compared to hot chip and thom - there are some shit songs on those albums.
i fail to see why the editors were nominated. pretty boring band that sounds a bit like the Doors. (yawn)
i wouldnt mind hearing the
Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan, Ballad Of The Broken Seas album :) sounded good on the prog last night.

didn't watch it, sack of shite. those monkeys suck.
That has been the rasko definitive guide to the mercury awards.

i thought thom yorkes performance was pretty damn good, much higher calibre than most. Zoe Rahman was cool too.
album wise, the monkeys album sounds like one big boring song to me, i like a couple of the hooks tho, i'd have given it to muse.

I have to say that I love the richard Hawley album. Morrisey meets Jonny cash....
never was going to win though

Awards are for the industry, their role is to boost sales. I liked how Frank Zappa explained why usually one performer/band gets a couple of grammys - a record company needs one big cow to milk in order to make profit, then worry about other bands.

*yawn...
the music industry is corrupt and shite. accept it.enjoy some live music on tv, regardless, it doesnt happen that often.
- doddster0
good point indian pole - i enjoyed the programme, irrespctive of wether you're 'into' awards or not.
yorkes performance was great. enjoyed Sway as well actually, much better than expected. Will probably check out Hawley and Campbell off the back of it as well.
As for the monkeys - not a fan, but can see why they got it.

bit obvious.

"the music industry is corrupt and shite. accept it."
ORLY? Who would've guessed..
I do enjoy music, I just couldn't care who got the award and who came second.

I'm not such a fan of t'Monkeys, but the way they became famous is interesting, and I think that's why they go tit.
- Concrete0

Most current acts blend into various shades of grey.

keep your ears open for dundee band The View.
theres been a lot of hype about them recently in the music press and the band havent even released anything yet. but theyve supported babyshambles on their tour, are about to support Primal Scream on their tour and theyve also been offered a Levis commercial deal seemingly.
being originally from dundee i know folk that know them or haev been to loads of their gigs around dundee. last fri had mates thru from dundee to see them at liquid rooms.
tix were £8 but were going for £80 on ebay.
i managed to get a ticket from someone outside for a tenner.the band were pretty good - not outstanding or anything "new" but they had great stage presence and their fans were going f*cking MENTAL!!!!!
ive never been to a gig where the crowd were so mad. esp for a band that havent released anything yet.their strapline thats on their badges is The View are on Fire! and thats what the whole crowd were shouting over and over like a football chant for about 45 mins before the band came on. HUGE anticipation for them coming on. the kinda thing that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end.
If you are a weegie, get along to the Carling venue on thursday night to see them supporting the Subways.
you wont be dissapointed.

keep your ears open for *insert town* band The *insert word*.
theres been a lot of hype about them recently in the music press and the band havent even released anything yet. but theyve supported *insert band* on their tour, are about to support *insert band* on their tour and theyve also been offered a *insert brand* commercial deal seemingly.
This is a completely unique happening, by the way, this band WILL live up to their billing, we promise.

kelpie..
honestly mate, if anyones sceptical about 'guitar fad' bands, it's me.
like i said, their music is 'good' but its nothing special or unique!
it was the experience of the gig that i was hyping and not the band themselves. get along to a gig - youl see what i mean
- kelpie0
just kiddin mate

there ain't a single shit track on either hot chip album.
but, then again, they're the only band out of any of the ones mentioned that i even remotely rate, so maybe i've got odd tastes...
and proclivities...
and other things...

come on para.
Hot Chip is a hot recent find to me and ive had the album on nonstop over the past few weeks, but there ARE a couple of not-so-hot-chip tunes on there
