I am going to be writing a cms for users and it shall be free.
What kind of features would be handy for a normal person (designer/developer/etc)? List them here.

Good luck to you and that can of worms cosmo ;)

I know there are a ton of free cms out there, but I want to build something thats user friendly. Plus ppl on nt are always looking for a good cms, might as well add the features that are most wanted.

also would like to see what cosmo, and everyone else things would be the easiest platform to build on?
I was planning to do something in flex/coldfusion.
However, more than willing to create something user intuitive in anything else

Thats a good start.

i don't think its too high, just need to stay focused on a good service with excellent function, that everyone can use. I am more than happy to work on this for free as well, because I wanted to explore something I can use as my own little module that i can apply to client's sites when they are deployed.

Ive been using this one for a bit but its just not quite there yet. It might be a good place to look for features. Administering the pages is pretty straight forward and most of the CMS functions are in 1 file.

not sure if this is what you're looking for, but:
standards-based output
good documentation
easy to theme with an external css file, not that browser-based crap
those are some of the reasons i like wordpress, which is not a cms per se.
i'll think of more stuff later.

Also please mention what kind of platform you would like, as akoni already mentioned.
PHP, ASP, Flash, etc?

i second moth with the form handling and mailer, and johndiggity's photo gallery suggestion.
a good photo gallery plugin is hard to find (for me at least).
- ender790
php based, please.

php/mysql is good for me, thanks.
