Wouldn't the shortest sci-fi story every simply be, "." or "".
Symbolising nothing.
Which would then have to be interpreted by the reader like one of those choose your own adventure things, thus having the propensity to be very long (like mine, involving a Shoo-Fly Pie, a Pie-Chart on how many people know what a Shoo-Fly Pie is in the world, and a scientist who found the ending of Pi while eating a Shoo-Fly Pie of which he did not know what he was eating, and that's just the pre-face).
Or very short, like, "Aliens, dude. Fucking aliens."

You don't need computers, robots or aliens. But you do need a story. Something like this;
"The sun rose in the west."
6 words, but a masterpiece of surprise, drama and suspense.
